pill popping: one to watch (and buy)

“I just had this picture in mind of a woman who’s an artist,” said Cathy Pill. “She finishes painting, has an appointment to go to, and runs out as she is, with wet hair.” The collection that the young Belgian designer showed in Paris this week captured that imagery in such a beautiful, summery way that it had some in the audience—who were dying in 34-degree heat (editor’s note: that’s 93 Fahrenheit for our American readers)—half-plotting to run back and liberate a dress to wear right then. Pill’s tank dresses, which come with togalike, asymmetrical flutters of georgette integrally attached, have a contemporary sportiness that looks really fresh. Her bright paint-spatter prints, too, are all entirely her own. This girl may have been working under the radar in out-of-the-way Brussels for a while, but having the time and space (and an education acquired at the Brussels Academy, which also produced Olivier Theyskens) to develop her ideas is really paying off. She deserves more exposure, and stockists, quick.
