words to live by from the duchess of windsor

July 10, 2008  2:51 pm

Duchessintro

Linda Evangelista, photographed by Steven Meisel, is cast as the Duchess (of Windsor) in the July issue of Vogue Italia. The pug-loving, Mainbocher-wearing former Mrs. Simpson had a way with words—her classic “You can never be too rich or too thin” quip has spawned thousands of needlepoint throw pillows. Here, we match some of her lesser known bons mots with tears from the shoot.

Duchess1

“Fill what’s empty, empty what’s full, and scratch where it itches.”

Duchess5

“I’m nothing to look at, so the only thing I can do is dress better than anyone else.”

Duchess4

“All my friends know that I’d rather shop than eat.”

Duchess2

“Forgive me for not writing but this man is exhausting.”
