"Victoria said he's her favorite designer, so I called him up, and he said, 'Yeah, let's do it!'" That was Simon Fuller, multimillionaire creator of American Idol, explaining how, with a little help from a certain Mrs. Beckham, he became Roland Mouret's new backer. Earlier today, Fuller and Mouret showed up at London's Nobu restaurant to announce their joint venture, 19RM under the umbrella of the former's company, 19 Entertainment. "I'm opening a creative office in London to work on different projects that won't stop at fashion," beamed Mouret. "There's no blueprint for what we're doing, but there are so many possibilities with TV, video, and other things."
With his first 19RM designa sinuous forties gown in cloudy gray chiffon worn by Luca Gadjusclose by, Mouret was close-lipped about specifics, although he did say that a collaboration with a mass brand and designs for the Ballet Rambert's eightieth anniversary in November will be his initial fashion sorties. In fact, Mouret's name is still owned by his former management, but with heavyweight money behind him, that doesn't seem a worry. "Now," he said, "I want to do something big."
