STYLE NOTES: CANNES
Royal Blue
In 1987, Princess Diana cruised to Cannes with Prince Charles aboard a yacht "to avoid the traffic," according to a report in The New York Times. Di upstaged her husband (as usual) with the help of Catherine Walker, her favorite dress designer. Her pale blue chiffon gown was a throwback to one worn by another legendary attendee: Grace Kelly. Di's idol had worn an ice blue, Edith Head stunner in To Catch a Thief, the Hitchcock jewel-theft caper set on the Riviera. The parallels between the two princesses would later take a more tragic twist.
