STYLE NOTES: CANNES

Come On, Vogue
The red-hot ticket in 1991 was not the premiere of the Coen brothers' Barton Fink (which clinched the Palme d'Or) or Rhapsody in August (a magnum opus by Akira Kurosawa). Rather, the place to be was a beach bash celebrating Madonna: Truth or Dare, Alek Keshishian's documentary of the singer's Blond Ambition tour. Twenty thousand fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the Material Girl ascending the Palais des Festivals steps. She received the adoring crowd modestly attired in a bra-and-corset dishabille by Jean Paul Gaultier.
