“The title of my thesis references a letter I received from a friend from Guatemala, which listed 105 reasons she would miss me.”
David Valencia is from Guatemala City, Guatemala. His thesis collection, 105 Reasons, reflects on his time living in New York City, drawing on his community of friends and the idea of memory and nostalgia, especially his memories of Guatemala and his family background in textiles.
"The title of my thesis references a letter I received from a friend from Guatemala, which listed 105 reasons she would miss me. Each reason is abstractly represented by rectangular shapes throughout the collection. I also researched the golden ratio in order to further develop the introspective quality of my work, integrating machine embroidery with contemporary tailoring, allowing for a unique exploration of color, texture, and construction that are often concealed within clothing. I turn the inside out, creating bold embroidery that emphasizes craft."
