Spring 2009 Preview

Sophie Théallet Is the New Azzedine Alaïa
We know the Alaïa comparison is a lot to live up to, but if anyone is ready it's Sophie Théallet. She trained with the Paris master for ten years and specializes in trend-defying feminine dresses with luxurious details. When planning her New York runway debut, the Brooklyn-based designer was drawn to the traditional costumes of her native France, which she started thinking about in relation to those of Native Americans and North African nomads. She calls the result "borderless" fashion, a juxtaposition of vivid color and neutral backgrounds. Invitations to her September 9 show are at a premium, but, happily, no passports are required.
