2004: The Dawn of the High-Low Designer Collaboration
After Karl Lagerfeld's 2004 H&M collection sold out within days, retailers and designers knew they were on to a win-win. The Swedish fast-fashion giant followed up with Stella McCartney, Alber Elbaz, et al.; Target enlisted the likes of Proenza Schouler; and Uniqlo even coaxed Jil Sander out of retirement. You no longer need a six-figure salary to get designer goods—just the upper-arm strength to wrest that bargain out of your fellow shopper's clutches.
