The Decade in Karl

2000: Karl the Polymath
Designing, photographing, illustrating, donning a yellow reflective jacket to promote road safety in France—Lagerfeld is a multitasker to end all multitaskers. So it was impressive but hardly surprising when, in 2000, he added another title to his long résumé: book publisher. Lagerfeld partnered with the German company Steidl to create Édition 7L (and later, a bookstore, 7L) to publish work he appreciated in a multitude of genres, from an anthology of Interview magazine under Andy Warhol to the texts of obscure poets. KL reads in four languages—English, French, Italian, and German—and if you've seen pictures of his legendary library, you know he's nothing if not appreciative of books.
