JONATHAN SAUNDERS
Jonathan Saunders is on his way to New York. "I feel a bit sad about not
showing in London, where there's such a support system," he says. "But a
new experience is starting for me. Learning about America has been a
great exercise in focusing who I am as a designer." At 30, Saunders
isn't leaving his adopted home base in London but just preparing to show
in New York. It's a big step, and a risk for any young designer
(homegrown or foreign), but Saunders isn't quite arriving on a wing and
a prayer. Last year, American reaction to his linear, graphic, colorful
aesthetic was so positive, he's pushing on a door that's at least half
open.
CHRISTOPHER KANE
It's hard to believe that Christopher Kane, the young Scot who incited
last year's "body con" movement, stepped out of Central Saint Martins
only two years ago. But it's true: Kane is just 25, has shown three
times, and has scarcely drawn breath since his first parade of tight,
neon-bright, ring-jingling dresses ignited a publicity fireball in
September 2006. "Things I dreamed about happenedand happened so
fast, like dominoes falling. As fast as that," he says. Donatella
Versace donated chain mail and shoes for his first show; journalists
clamored over him; retailers fought for exclusives; Topshop sponsored
him and asked him to design a collection. "I'm so lucky," he exhales,
barely believing it.
